In recent news, another fatal pedestrian accident occurred in Tucson on Saturday afternoon. According to reports by ABC 15, the incident happened at about 5:30 p.m. on East Pennington Street when a man in his sixties was struck by a car as he crossed the street. Investigations appear to be reporting that the victim was not in the crosswalk when the accident happened.
The man was rushed to a nearby hospital but died of his injuries the following day.
Police expect no charges will be filed in the fatal crash. Our hearts and prayers go out to the family members of all parties involved.
Arizona Pedestrian Accident Statistics
Motorists and pedestrians alike are susceptible to fatal accidents. As reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were 120 pedestrians killed in Arizona in 2009 alone, which makes up approximately three percent of the country’s total pedestrian fatalities for the year.
Pedestrian Rights and Duties
Pedestrians have their share of responsibilities in order to avoid accidents. Crosswalks and traffic signals, for example, are to be observed in order to ensure safety. A pedestrian using a crosswalk has the right of way as stated by the law, thus requiring approaching vehicles to yield (28-792).
Needless to say, however, even on a crosswalk pedestrians must practice utmost care and should stay alert when crossing the street. Drivers must also pay special attention to pedestrians even if they are not in the crosswalk.
