With one of our children’s favorite holidays just a few short days away, we wanted to take a moment to think again about the safety precautions parents should take before sending their children out in efforts to fill their candy buckets. There are many more dangers that lurk on Halloween, such as an increased number of impaired drivers on the road, tripping hazards, and bad candy. AAA Arizona has put together a list of tips for parents to follow to help everyone have a safe and fun Halloween (Courtesy of KPHO 10/25/10).
- When choosing costumes, stick with bright colors that can be seen at night. Add reflective tape to clothing, shoes, and bags to help motorists see the trick-or-treaters, and have them carry a bright flashlight.
- Check costumes for loose strings, buttons, or zippers that may pose tripping hazards. Costumes should fit well and not be too long for the child.
- Plan routes ahead of time, sticking with familiar houses on well-lit roads only. Review Arizona pedestrian safety tips as well, such as walking on the sidewalk, crossing only at crosswalks, and looking both ways before crossing a driveway or street.
- Children under 12 should always be accompanied by a responsible adult on their trick or treating outings.
- Only take wrapped and sealed candy, and don’t allow children to eat any until they arrive at home and an adult inspects it.
