Information about Arizona Injuries and How to Use Crutches, Canes, and Walkers
by Phoenix Personal Injury Attorney - Mark Breyer
Often times after a severe car, trucking, bike, motorcycle, pedestrian, or slip and fall accident our clients rely on the help of crutches, a cane, or a walker for mobility. However, is some cases people are never able to recover from a horrific accident. After a serious accident, as Arizona personal injury lawyers, unfortunately, we see numerous clients that have had to deal with severe personal injuries that leave them unable to walk.
Many times after surgery or a serious injury, the patient has to even be in a wheel chair for months. If a person has ever injured a lower limb or broken a bone they may have needed to use crutches, a cane, or a walker during their recovery. Sometimes there is no recovery because the injuries are so severe. Sometimes when looking at pictures of vehicles after an accident, it is amazing that people even survived after such a horrific accident.
A walker can be a great option for someone that has had a knee or hip replacement. Walkers provide patients with much more stability than crutches or a cane. With each step a person can keep all of the weigh off of their lower body. A walker is meant for a slow pace. As a person gets stronger, they will be able to add more and more weight on their lower body when using a walker.
Crutches should be fitted according to the height of the patient. They should be between 1 and 1.5 inches below the persons armpits when standing. The handles should meet at the persons hips. A person should bend their elbows slightly when walking to help distribute the weight.A cane can be helpful if a person is unsure about balancing with crutches, or is in poor overall health. The top of the cane should be level with the person's wrist. A cane should be held opposite to the side of the body that needs support.
When a patient uses one of the aids mobility can seem very difficult at first but will improve. When returning home from the hospital extra care will need to be taken with household items. This can be done by installing a bar in the shower and making sure bathroom rugs are removed to avoid slipping. It is also helpful to create a bedroom area in the living room if the person is living in a two story home.
Many times it is best to remember that after an accident, it will take time to heal or to gain mobility. Patience is a virtue as the saying goes. When you have been injured in a serious accident in Phoenix, it is important to try to rely on family and friends to let them help you as much as possible. After an accident, it is hard to recovery and heal so the more you can rely on loves ones to help you through such a difficult time, hopefully the better able you are to focus on your recovery.
