On July 17, 1878 officials had Mesa registered as a city in Arizona with just 1 square mile of city limits. In 1879 the first school was built within Mesa's city limits. In 1883, officials had Mesa incorporated as a city and the population was about 300 people. In the early 1940s, Mesa was home to many military people because of the location of Falcon Field and Williams Field. As Phoenix Arizona began exploding in terms of population growth, so did the city of Mesa along with the Phoenix Metro area. The population of Mesa breaks down into about 150,000 households and 100,000 families.

The U.S. 60 is a main freeways running through Mesa, Arizona. This route runs through Phoenix to Apache Junction which is further east from Phoenix than Mesa. The recently build Loop 101 and Loop 202 have helped connect Mesa more quickly to other areas of the Phoenix metro area. Mesa did not have any public transit on Sundays and its public transit was quite limited until just recently when the METRO Light Rail System was built. The METRO Light System is now running throughout Mesa and adjacent Phoenix metro cities.
Mesa is home to many public schools. There is a small portion of Mesa that is run by Gilbert Public Schools instead of Mesa Public Schools. The public school districts in Mesa also include the Tempe Elementary School District and Tempe Union High School District. The main college in Mesa is the Mesa Community College known as MCC. It is the largest community college of the Phoenix Metro Colleges. MCC enrolls over 22,000 students. Mesa also is home to the Polytechnic campus of the Arizona State University. This part of ASU is located in southwest Mesa.
