Personal Injury Lawyers Report that Car Accidents Have Increased in Peoria
by Peoria Car Accident Attorneys - Mark Breyer
Peoria has been seeing an increase in car accidents. Based on the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), there were 981 injuries and 3 fatal injuries in Peoria car accidents in 2009. As a result, Peoria installed red-light cameras at different intersections throughout the city. Recently, it has been voted that all red-light cameras in Peoria will be coming down. The city had a contract with a company called Reflex Traffic Systems.
As personal injury lawyers in Peoria, we were surprised to hear that Peoria's red-light cameras have stopped taking pictures as of October 3, 2011. Many people thought that the red-light cameras would decrease the number of car accidents, but reports show just the opposite. The intersections where the red-light cameras were installed in Peoria actually showed an increased number of crashes at the monitored site locations. The research is a combination of the accident statistics for the three years that the police had the red-light cameras installed.
Red-light citation did decrease some from 2008-2010 but the goal of the red-lights was to decrease the number of Peoria car crashes. The number of Peoria car crashes and violations did not decrease. Unfortunately, people were still causing car accident, making it so that people need to find the best injury lawyers to help them with their injury claim.
What Peoria did find, however, was that increasing the yellow light time at intersections did have an impact on driver decision. The city is currently looking into extending the yellow light times more at each intersection. There were some advocates of maintaining the red light cameras at the following Peoria intersections:
- 83rd Avenue and Union Hills Drive;
- 91st Avenue and Bell Road;
- 83rd Avenue and Thunderbird Road; and,
- 75th Avenue and Thunderbird Road.
Given the research, however, the ultimate decision was to have all red-light cameras come down.
