Overview of Pima County Drunk Driving Statistics

Recent Pima County drunk driving statistics have us deeply concerned. Over the decade between 2000 and 2010, the total number of car crashes in Pima County decreased by more than 25 percent from 21,073 in 2000 to 15,764 in 2010, according to records kept by the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT). In that same timeframe, the number of drunk driving collisions in Pima County also decreased by more than 28.5 percent from 1,160 in 2000 to 829 in 2010. Despite these numbers, the rate of injury did not change substantially and remained above 69 percent in 2010. The most alarming figures are those concerning deaths in alcohol-related collisions from 2000 to 2010. In 2000, less than two percent of all crashes resulted in death while in 2010 that figure rose to nearly four-and-a-half percent.

How to Avoid Becoming a Part of Pima County Drunk Driving Statistics

Many drivers are added each year to the Pima County drunk driving statistics as both victims and as impaired drivers. Drivers can avoid causing a drunk driving accident by keeping the name and number of a reliable friend or cab company in their cell phone at all times, by always having a designated driver, or by taking an oath to never drive while impaired. Other drivers out on the road can reduce their risk of being involved in a drunk driving accident by getting out of the way; if a driver suspects that the driver of another vehicle is impaired they should immediately pull off the road, turn the corner, or take the nearest freeway exit to distance themselves from the drunk driver. Never slow down or speed up as additional confusion can result in a collision. Once safe, drivers should contact 9-1-1 to report the drunk driver.
