Jet Ski Accident Leaves Four Children Hospitalized

By Breyer Law Offices on May 29, 2018

Boating and jet ski accidents are becoming more and more prevalent as the summer months are upon us. Four children were seriously injured over Memorial Day weekend at Apache Lake when their two jet skis collided, leaving them stranded in the lake until they were rescued by passersby. Three of the children had to be life-flighted to a nearby hospital.

The children ranged in ages from 11 to 14. None of their injuries were listed as life-threatening, but were very serious.

Jet ski and boating injuries can include:

  • neck injuries
  • spine injuries
  • concussions
  • drowning injuries
  • broken bones
  • head injuries
  • face injuries
  • fractures
  • whiplash injuries
  • back injuries

It is unclear if the children were wearing life vests and it is also unclear how fast they were traveling when they collided. Collisions on jet skis and boats can be as serious as car collisions, and sometimes even worse because passengers on jet skis don’t have seatbelts.

It is also unclear how old the children were who were driving. While Arizona doesn’t require boating education courses, you do have to be age 12 or older to operate a vessel with 8 horsepower or more unless your parent is onboard with you. Arizona also doesn’t require boating insurance, so accidents that occur on jet skis and other watercraft might not be covered by regular insurance. In the event that hospital bills and repair expenses are high, this leaves some families in very bad financial positions.

There are a few things you can do to increase your safety in the water, especially during busy holiday weekends. First, make sure everyone wears life vests and obeys all posted rules at the lake you visit. Try operating your watercraft early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the busier times. Do not let children under the age of 12 operate the craft unless a parent is onboard. Make sure your watercraft is in good operating condition so you don’t get stranded. Have your entire family take a boating education course at boat-ed.com. This will ensure they know the safety rules and can identify and steer clear of most dangerous situations.
